今年も例年通り、PyCon JP ではライトニングトークを開催します。ライトニングトークは、Pythonに興味がある人にとって興味深い内容であれば、どんなテーマでも構いません。時間制限は5分と短いですが、それ以外はあまりルールはありません。共有したいテーマがあれば、ぜひこの機会を活用してください。

「自分のテーマはライトニングトークにふさわしくないかも...」と思うかもしれませんが、きっとそんなことはありません。

例えば、「XXXというテーマについてはみんなもう知ってるんじゃないか」と思う方がいらっしゃるかもしれません。でも大丈夫です。PyCon JPにはさまざまなバックグラウンドを持つ参加者が集まるため、あなたの専門分野で当たり前のことを知らない人も多くいます。そんな人にとっては、あなたのライトニングトークは専門外のことを多く学べる、貴重な機会になり得ます。

また、「XXXというテーマについて自分は専門家ではないから話せない」と心配かもしれませんが、実際にはあなたが思っている以上に詳しいはずです。しかも、5分以内であれば、エキスパートレベルの内容に踏み込むことなく、興味深い内容を共有できるでしょう。

「大勢の前で話すのが怖い」と感じる方もいらっしゃるでしょう。確かに緊張するかもしれませんが、これを素晴らしい挑戦の機会として捉えてみてください。PyCon JP には非常にフレンドリーな人たちが集まっており、皆があなたの発表を応援しています。実は、経験豊富なスピーカーであっても、人前で話すときは少なからず緊張するものです。

さて、これでライトニングトークに挑戦したくなってきたのではないでしょうか？最後に、どうすれば参加できるかご説明します。

カンファレンス初日に、受付のそばボックスが設置され、そのそばには紙とペンが用意されています。紙にトークのタイトル、1文での説明、名前、そしてメールアドレスを記入してボックスに入れてください。午後4時にトークが選ばれるので、メールを必ずチェックしましょう。もしあなたのトークが選ばれたら、メールの指示に従って確認を行います。そして、午後5時20分に20階の #pyconjp_1 ステージに、発表に必要なものを持ってきてください。

As usual, we will have Lightning Talks at this year's PyCon JP. Lightning Talks are five minute talks on any topic you’d like, as long as it will be of some interest to other Python people. While the time limit is strict, everything else about them is pretty casual. If you have a topic you would like to share, this is a great opportunity to do so. Sign ups are done at the conference itself, details are explained at the end of this blog post.

You might think your topic is not worth a Lightning Talk, but you are almost certainly incorrect.

You may think “everyone already knows about X”, but PyCon JP is attended by a diverse group of people from different backgrounds, so many will not have heard of the things that are common in your niche.

Maybe you’re worried that “I’m not an expert on X, so I can’t talk about it”, but you probably know more than you think. Also, since it’s only up to five minutes, you can probably share some interesting things without needing to go into “expert level” topics.

You might be scared to talk in front of so many people, and yes, it is intimidating, but it is an excellent opportunity to try to do so. We have very friendly people attend PyCon JP and we are all there to support you giving your talk. It’s also completely normal to be nervous when doing public speaking, everyone does, even very seasoned speakers.

I hope that by now I have convinced you that you should give a Lightning Talk, so how do you do that? On the first day of the conference, there will be a box near the Staff HQ next to Reception on the fourth floor with some slips of paper and pens next to it. Write your talk title, one sentence description, name and email on the slip of paper and put it in the box. Make sure to check your email at 4pm when talks will be selected. If your talk has been selected, confirm it according to the instructions in the email. Then, at 5:20pm, come to the stage in room #pyconjp_1 on the 20th floor with everything you need to give your talk.
