Review Points for PyCon APAC 2023 Proposals

This is koyhoge, PyCon APAC 2023 Program Team Leader.

This year, PyCon JP will be held as PyCon APAC 2023, the international Python conference for the Asia-Pacific region.

This blog post contains information on what reviewers look for when evaluating PyCon APAC 2023 talk proposals. Please keep this information in mind when preparing your talk proposal.

The call for proposals this year covers lightning talks, poster sessions, tutorials, and regular talks. Regular talks can be either 15 minutes(short) or 30 minutes(standard) long, the latter being more preferable. The evaluation criteria below are primarily for regular presentations.

The review criteria are as follows. Proposals that match as many of the criteria below as possible will be evaluated higher, with earlier criteria having more weight.

1. The content expands the knowledge of Python for beginners.
2. It showcases how Python is used in society.
3. The content is unique or novel.
4. The talk structure in the proposal gives a clear picture.
5. It contributes to the discourse in the international Python community.
6. It demonstrates fun and enthusiasm using Python.
7. The audience can take away specific knowledge or use cases.

The reviewers may not be familiar with the domains covered by your proposal. With this in mind, it will be better if you provide an explanation that is easy to understand for new reviewers.

In addition, because this year’s event is a Pycon APAC, there will be more English sessions than Japanese ones. Therefore, we expect the selection of Japanese sessions to be more competitive than in previous years.

After you submit a proposal, you can edit it on the proposal submission page within the call for proposals period.

We are also looking for external reviewers to evaluate talk proposals.
We will be happy if you can actively participate in the review process.

このブログでは、PyCon APAC 2023のトークプロポーザルに関して、レビュアーがどのような観点で評価を行うかという情報を共有します。プロポーザル作成の参考にしてください。

今年の PyCon JP は、アジア・パシフィック地域の国際カンファレンスである PyCon APAC 2023 として開催されることになりました。また今回は CfP でライトニングトーク(5分)やポスターセッション、チュートリアルセッションの募集も同時に行っています。以下は主に通常の発表 (標準30分、または15分) に対する評価の視点です。

レビュー観点は以下の通りです。なるべく上の項目を満たしている方が評価されます。

1. Python 初心者にとって自らの知見を広げる内容か
2. Python が社会で活用されている具体的なイメージを描けるか
3. 内容に独自性・新規性はあるか
4. トークの発表が明確にイメージできるほど構成は詳細に書かれているか
5. コミュニティの国際交流に寄与するか
6. Python を使う「楽しさ・熱意」をアピールできるか
7. 聴衆が具体的に持ち帰ることができる知識や技術の利用方法・工夫があるか

提出していただくプロポーザルがレビュアーにとって馴染みのない分野ということもありえます。その点も考慮して、初めて見る人にもわかりやすい説明を心がけて頂けるとなお良いと思います。また今回のイベントではPyCon APACと題して開催するため、英語セッションの方が数が多くなる予定です。そのため日本語による発表は競争率が高くなると予想されます。

すでに提出した方も募集期間内であれば、プロポーザル提出ページにて変更可能です。

また、トークプロポーザルを評価する外部レビュアーも募集します。

プロポーザルを提出した方もレビューに参加できますので、積極的に参加をして頂ければ嬉しいです。

Call for Proposal Reviewers of PyCon APAC 2023

Hello, I'm Peacock, the Vice-Chair of PyCon APAC 2023.

We are looking for people to review proposals for PyCon APAC 2023 with us.

As I recently announced on this blog, we opened the call for proposals.

Unfortunately, there is a limit to the number of sessions we can accept for a two-day conference.

Therefore, we must review and accept or reject proposals that are submitted.

PyCon JP, the organizing body for PyCon APAC 2023, reviews proposals from various perspectives before accepting them.

However, a review by the conference volunteers alone can lead to a somewhat biased selection, so we hope to expand the pool of reviewers for a wider range of viewpoints.

It is essential to examine proposals from different perspectives and obtain a balance from various opinions to create dialogue and connections among the participants.

While high-quality and enthusiastic proposals are significant, review perspectives from professionals in various fields are also necessary.

By participating in the review of proposals, you can broaden your knowledge and insight about Python, and ensure a vibrant and exciting selection of talks at the conference.

Of course, we also welcome reviews focused on specific areas (Python core, web, machine learning, etc.), meaning you do not need to review all proposals.

We will invite you to our Slack PyCon JP workspace # 2023-reviewers channel and announce detailed instructions on conducting a review on that channel.

We will review all proposals, including Talks, Posters, Lightning Talks, and Tutorials.

The review period is from the publication of this Blog to June 17.

Then, on June 18 (Sun.), we will hold an acceptance meeting and make the final selection of proposals.

Participation in the adoption meeting is not mandatory, but highly encouraged.

(Added May 31): Because the start of the review was delayed beyond schedule, the review period was extended to July 2, and the adoption meeting was also postponed to July 9.

こんにちは。PyCon APAC 2023 副座長のPeacockです。

PyCon APAC 2023のプロポーザルを一緒にレビューしてくださる方を募集します。

以前このブログでご案内した通り、現在トークプロポーザルを募集しています。

2日間のカンファレンスのセッションの数には上限があります。

そのため、応募いただいたプロポーザルに対してレビューを行い、採否を決めなければなりません。

PyCon APAC 2023の運営主体であるPyCon JPではプロポーザルを採択するにあたって、幅広い視点からレビューを行っています。

しかしながら、スタッフ内のレビューだけでは、人数も少なく、視点も偏りがちです。

参加者同士の対話、繋がりを作るためには、異なる視点でプロポーザルを吟味し、多彩な意見から、バランスを得ることが大事だと考えています。

質の高い・熱意のこもったプロポーザルも大事ですが、様々な分野のプロフェッショナルな方からのレビューの視点も必要だと考えています。

プロポーザルのレビューに参加することで、Pythonに関する知見や見聞を広めることができます。

8/09(月)に開催したプロポーザル採択mtgの結果をお伝えします。
Thank you for all your proposal submissions to PyCon JP 2021.
We're excited to announce the result of our proposal review meeting. 

85本の中から全体で34本採択しました（プロポーザルの内訳について）。
採択率は40.0%でした。
In total number, we received 85 proposals (details).
Of these 85 proposals, we were able to accept 34 proposals to fit our timetable, leading to an acceptance rate of 40.0%.

PyCon JP 2021 トークプロポーザル レビュー観点

観点は、以下の順に評価の優先度がおかれます。なるべく上の項目を満たしている方が評価されます。

1. 内容はPythonと関連しているか　　（優先度：高）

3. 具体的に持ち帰ることができる知識は明確か

4. 発表者の伝えたいメッセージは明確か

I will share review perspectives of talk proposals of PyCon JP 2021 in this post.

Call for talk proposals is open at https://sessionize.com/pyconjp2021-cfs/ until July 10, 2021 (Sat).

 

PyCon JP 2021 review perspectives of talk proposals

Your proposal will be reviewed based on the priority below (1 is the highest, and 6 is the lowest). The more you include the higher priorities, the more likely it is that your proposal will be evaluated.

1. Is the content related to Python?

2. Is it unique and new?

3. Is there specific knowledge that can be taken away?

4. Is there a clear message that the presenter wants to convey?

5. Is the target audience clear?

6. Is the structure of the talk so clear that reviewers can clearly visualize the presentation?

Some reviewers may not be familiar with the field of your talk. It is better to explain your proposal in such a way that they can also understand it clearly.

 

If you want to share your knowledge about Python at PyCon JP 2021, we recommend you write your proposal based on the above perspectives.

Once you submit your proposal on Sessionize, you can update the document anytime until the end date of the application period.

 

We are also looking for external reviewers to evaluate the talk proposals (currently in preparation).

If you have submitted a proposal, you can also participate in the review.

We will post an announcement here on the PyCon JP blog when we start accepting applications for the external reviewers.

登壇方法について

PyCon JP 2020は、8/28（金）8/29（土）にオンラインにて開催いたします。
登壇の際の配信方法やツールについては後日追ってご連絡いたします。

オンライン開催に伴い、スピーカーの皆様には 【オンラインによるライブ配信】へのご協力をお願いしています。
こちらは PyCon JPのミッションである「Pythonユーザーが一堂に会する」といった観点からオンライン上で一堂に会し、登壇や質疑を通して知見を交換いただく機会とするためです。

オンライン登壇が初めての場合でも大丈夫です！
オンライン登壇への不安が解消できるよう私たち運営スタッフも全力を尽くします！

登壇に使うツールは運営スタッフで選定いたしますので、現地開催と同様にスライドと発表内容をご準備ください。
8月には、何回か発表のリハーサルを予定しています。

遠方の方は移動の必要なく登壇頂けるチャンスですので、ぜひチャレンジして頂きたいです！

How would I give the presentation?

PyCon JP 2020 will be held online on Friday, August 28, and Saturday, August 29(JST).
We will inform our speakers of the methods and tools of streaming later.

We would like to ask the speakers for their cooperation in the live online broadcast.
Based on PyCon JP's mission "To bring Python users together", we'll be bringing them together online to share their knowledge and experiences through presentations, questions, and answers.

If you've never made a presentation online, please don't hesitate or be afraid.
We'll do everything we can for you not to worry about speaking online.

PyCon JP teams select the proper tools for live streaming.
All you need to do is to prepare your presentation and materials as you would at an on-site event.
We will have some rehearsals in August to make our first online event a success.

If you are far away from Japan, this is the opportunity to speak without minding the travel or visa-stuff, so we would like you to try this!

PyCon JP 2020 review perspectives of talk proposals

1. Is the content related to Python?
2. Is there originality or new knowledge in the content? (not just the content of "I tried to use something for trial")
3. Does the content have insights that the audience can use in their Python use cases?
4. Is the target audience of your talk clear? And your contents and structure are suitable for them?
5. Do you have a clear picture of a presentation that uses the time slot well?

• We weight the perspectives like item 1 is the top priority; item 2 is the second priority ...
• Some reviewers may not be familiar with the topic of your talk. It's better to explain your proposal in such a way that they can also understand it clearly.

If you want to share your knowledge about Python at PyCon JP 2020, we recommend to try to write your proposal based on the above perspectives.
You can update your proposal that has been already submitted at sessionize until the end date of application.

PyCon JP 2019 のライトニングトークとポスターセッションで発表していただく内容を募集しています。

現在の応募数を共有します。(　)内は採択予定数

さて、本日は、
「ライトニングトークとポスターセッションのレビュー観点」と
「スピーカーTシャツ」に関するお知らせをします。


ポスターセッションとは？
ポスターセッションとは、ポスターを掲示し、その前で発表するセッションです。
こういった技術カンファレンスでは、トークセッションが主役のように感じますが、
ポスターセッションの存在を忘れてはいけません。
ポスターセッションの利点は、他の参加者と直接意見交換や議論ができることです。
「ある課題を解決するためにこういうライブラリー作った」や「Python を使ってこういったことをこうやって解決した」といったような内容やトークでご提案いただく形で応募OKです！
積極的なご提案をお待ちしています。


ライトニングトークとは？
ライトニングトークとは、5分間でPythonに関連することについて発表するセッションです。
ライトニングトークでは、貴方の持っている技術や経験を簡潔に分かりやすくまとめることが重要です。加えて、ただ単に「～をやった」というトークではなく、
「この5分の発表を聞くことによって、何が解決し、何が嬉しいか？」などを意識して提案してみてください。



まず、
「ライトニングトークとポスターセッションのレビュー観点」については以下の通りです。

レビュー観点

ライトニングトークとポスターセッション（個人）の共通のレビュー観点：

• Pythonとの関連を重視： 内容はPythonと関連しているか？
• 独自性・新規性： 内容に独自性・新規性はあるか？
• 構成： 課題や目的、全体の流れ、ストーリーがしっかり構成されているか？
• 技術・工夫： 目的や課題を達成するための技術の説明・利用方法や工夫があるか？
• プレゼンテーション： プロポーザルを一目見ただけでどのような発表か分かるか？　

Common Review Points of Lightning Talks and Poster Session (individually):

• Relation to Python: Is the content related to Python?
• Uniqueness & novelty: Is the content unique or novel?
• Structure: Is the issue, purpose, whole flow, and story well structured?
• Technology & device: Does the content include explanation of technology, how to use a technology or device to achieve a purpose or resolve an issue?
• Presentation: Is the content clear so that we can imagine your presentation at first glance of the proposal?

ライトニングトークのレビュー観点：

• 5分で発表できる内容か？
• ただやってみた系ではないか？

Review points of Lightning Talks: 

• Is the content can be spoken in 5 minutes?
• Isn't it just the content of "I tried to use something for trial"?

ポスターセッション（個人）のレビュー観点：

• Pythonとの関連や独自性に重みを置いてレビューします。（トークプロポーザルのレビューよりは厳しくありません。）

Review Points of Poster Session (individually):

• We will put weight on the association and uniqueness with Python and review it. (It is less strict than Talk Proposal Review. )

ポスターセッション（コミュニティ）については、査読を実施しない予定です。
（CFPのNoteにコミュニティのウェブサイトURLを記載して下さい）
※ 活動実績が不明であったり、怪しい投稿であったりした場合は採択されない場合があります。

We will not check poster session proposals for community. 
(Please write your community website in CPF note.)
※ We will reject in the case of unknown activity results or suspicious communities.



次に、「スピーカーTシャツ」については以下の通りです。

スピーカーTシャツについて

スピーカーTシャツは、査読を受けた発表者にのみ配布します。
つまり、スピーカーTシャツを受け取ることが出来るセッションは以下の通りです。
(Speakers in the following sessions can receive T-shirts for speakers because their proposals were adopted after a review process.)

• トークセッション (Talks)
• ライトニングトークセッション (Lightning Talks)
• ポスターセッション（個人） (Poster Session (individually))
• ビギナーセッション　

また、今年は「飛び込みライトニングトーク」を実施予定です。（カンファレンス当日、会場で募集します！）
後日、詳細を発表します。

注意：
以下のセッションは査読がないため、スピーカーTシャツを受け取ることができません。
(Speakers in the following sessions do NOT receive T-shirts for speakers because there is no review process.)

• 飛び込みライトニングトーク  (Open Lightning Talks, now planning)

トーク選考のレビュワーを募集します

PyCon JP 2015ではトークセッションのレビュワーを募集します。

今年もたくさんの応募をいただきました！

なぜレビュワーを募集するのか

以前の記事でも少し触れましたが、PyCon JP 2015では昨年と同様に運営スタッフと運営メーリングリスト (PyCon JP の Organizer ML) で公募したボランティアのレビュワーの方々と共にレビューを行います。

ではなぜこのような方法をとっているのかという点ですが、トークを採択するにあたって今年のテーマである Possibilities of Python について幅広い視点からレビューをしたいという思いがあるためです。

よって幅広い視点でレビューをするためには、スタッフ内だけでレビューするのではなく、ボランティアのレビュワーを募集して行う必要があると考えました。

レビュー方法について

レビュワーとして参加するにはまずメーリングリストへ登録してください。
レビュワー募集に関する情報が後日、登録したメールアドレス宛に届きます。

レビューはPyCon JPのサイトにレビューシステムが用意されているので、これを利用します。

具体的には、それぞれのプロポーザルについて以下の評価をレビュワーの皆さんから投稿していただきます。

• +1 — Good proposal and I will argue for it to be accepted. (良い、採用されるべき)
• +0 — OK proposal, but I will not argue for it to be accepted. (まあまあ、採用されてもいい)
• −0 — Weak proposal, but I will not argue strongly against acceptance. (ちょっと弱い、採用されても文句は言わない)
• −1 — Serious issues and I will argue to reject this proposal. (問題があるので、採用されるべきではない)

加えてこの評価を投稿する際、レビュワーには評価理由などについてコメントをつけてもらいます。

このコメントはすべてのレビュワーが見ることができるようになっています。

レビュー後の流れについて

レビューが完了したあと、トークセッションの選考に入ります。

大前提として今年のテーマである Possibilities of Python に沿っているかというのはありますが、基本的に+1が多い順で並べての選考となります。

さらに今年はレビュワーの評価に加えてSNSを利用した投票システムによる加点も考慮されます。

選考が終わり、プログラムが決定した時点でまた改めて今年の動向についての情報を公開予定ですのでお待ちください。

PyCon JP 2015 のトーク選考について

PyCon JP 2015 では、現在トークセッションの演題を募集しています。
今年もトークセッションの採用において選考を行う予定です。

そこで、選考方法が明確でない！と言ったご意見や、選考がどのように行われているのか知りたい、というようなお話を聞くので、この度詳しく説明させて頂きたいと思います。
皆さんの、プロポーザル (演題の提案) の投稿の助けになれば幸いです。

今年はいくつか変更点がありますが、この内容を元に説明させていただきます。

レビュー方法について
PyCon JP 2015 では昨年同様に、運営スタッフと運営メーリングリストで公募したボランティアのレビュワーの方々と共にレビュー(査読)を行います。昨年は 11 名で行いました。
今年も、レビュワーの募集を PyCon JP の Organizer ML 上で行う予定です。

レビューは、PyCon JP のサイトにレビューシステムが用意されており、これを利用して行います。このシステムは、PyCon US で使われているものと基本的に同じです。

また、レビューシステム上では、プロポーザルを投稿していただいた皆さんにフィードバックコメントを送ることができるようになっており、適時レビュワーはこの機能を利用して皆さんにフィードバックを送ることもできるようになっています。

よって、早めに投稿するとレビュワーからフィードバックが届く可能性があります！ みなさん、プロポーザルは早めに投稿しましょう。

レビューは、それぞれのプロポーザルに以下の4段階評価をレビュワーの皆様に投稿していただきます。

• +1 — Good proposal and I will argue for it to be accepted. (良い、採用されるべき)
• +0 — OK proposal, but I will not argue for it to be accepted. (まあまあ、採用されてもいい)
• −0 — Weak proposal, but I will not argue strongly against acceptance. (ちょっと弱い、採用されても文句は言わない)
• −1 — Serious issues and I will argue to reject this proposal. (問題があるので、採用されるべきではない)

この評価の他に、コメントをつけることができ、このコメントはすべてのレビュワーが見ることができます。

去年の選考では、明確に発表の内容が想像できるもの、今年のテーマに沿ったもの、今までなかったような発表、などが良い評価を得られるポイントになっていたと感じます。

また、今年はプロポーザルが投稿された時点ですべて公開されます！

皆さんから SNS などで得られる意見も、レビュワーは参考にします。よって、意見をどんどん投稿していただけると嬉しいです。


最終的な選考方法
レビューが終了すると、選考会議を行って集まった評価値を元に、最終的なプログラムを決定します。

基本的に、+1 の多い順番から並べていき、一定以上はすべて通過となります。
つまり、+0 や -0, -1 の数より、どれだけ多くの +1 が取れるかが重要です。

昨年度で言えば、複数の +1 がないプロポーザルは通過していません。

最終的には同じような評価で並ぶので、基本的には評価の点数順になりますが、カテゴリの偏りなどを考慮して、話し合いをして最後の穴埋めをします。
この時に、-1 や -0 がついていると、大きな問題となることが多いです。


まとめ
プログラムチームから皆さんにお伝えしたい点は以下の3つです。

• 要約をなるべく詳しく記入しましょう！
  一言、一文では、実際は良い内容でも +0 やマイナスの評価になりがちです。
• 発表の肝となる部分を明確に！
  レビュワーは、ほぼすべてのプロポーザル (100件近く) に目を通しています。つまり、他に同じような内容があると、要点が明確になっているかどうかが、良い評価を得られるポイントになります。
• はやめに投稿してください！
  フィードバックがもられるかもしれません？！
